While direct industry experience is preferred, the SBA recognizes that transferable management skills (e.g., finance, marketing, operations) can be sufficient. Lenders must document how the new owner's background, education, and prior work experience prepare them to successfully operate the acquired business, often requiring a strong business plan or a period of seller training/transition.
A new owner with 15 years of senior management experience in a large corporation acquires a small manufacturing business, despite no prior manufacturing experience. The lender would document their transferable skills in leadership, financial management, and process improvement, possibly requiring a detailed business plan and seller transition support.
