For SBA lenders
Short answer
The SBA has sunsetted the requirement for using the SBSS score for 7(a) Small Loans, returning underwriting decisions to traditional credit analysis.
The SBSS (Small Business Scoring Service) score was previously used by lenders for streamlined underwriting of 7(a) Small Loans (typically under $350,000). However, the SBA announced its sunset, meaning lenders now must rely on their own prudent lending standards and credit analysis for these loans, similar to larger 7(a) loans. This change emphasizes a more comprehensive review of the borrower's creditworthiness.
Previously, a lender would use an SBSS score to quickly assess eligibility for a $200,000 7(a) Small Loan. Now, the lender must conduct a full credit review, including analyzing personal and business credit reports, financial statements, and cash flow projections, regardless of the loan amount.
Insider move
Lenders must update their internal underwriting policies and procedures to reflect the discontinuation of the SBSS score. They need to ensure their credit analysts are adequately trained in performing comprehensive credit analyses for all 7(a) loan sizes, maintaining prudent lending standards.
