SBA 7(a) Q&A
Short answer
Lenders will assess your general business management skills, relevant transferable experience, and your plan for addressing any industry-specific knowledge gaps, often requiring strong operational support.
While direct industry experience is preferred, it's not always mandatory. Lenders evaluate your past managerial roles, leadership capabilities, financial acumen, and ability to learn. They will also look for a solid business plan, potentially including hiring experienced staff, retaining key employees, or engaging industry-specific consultants to compensate for your lack of direct experience.
A buyer with extensive management experience in retail is acquiring a light manufacturing business. The lender will review their P&L management, employee supervision, and supply chain experience, and may require the buyer to retain the existing operations manager for a minimum of 1-2 years.
Insider move
Lenders are concerned about the borrower's ability to successfully operate the business. They seek assurance that the buyer has either direct experience or a credible plan to quickly gain the necessary industry knowledge and operational expertise to ensure business continuity and profitability.
