SBA loan basics
Short answer
A lender's 'SBA Preferred Lender' (PLP) status benefits the borrower by typically resulting in faster loan approvals and a more streamlined application process.
PLP lenders have the authority to make final credit decisions on SBA loans without submitting the full loan package to the SBA for review. This delegated authority eliminates a layer of bureaucracy and significantly reduces the time from application submission to loan authorization.
A borrower submitting a complete application to a PLP lender might receive a commitment letter within weeks, whereas the same application with a non-PLP lender could take months due to the additional SBA review time.
Insider move
PLP lenders assume greater responsibility for adherence to SBA rules and proper underwriting. They must maintain high quality in their loan portfolios to retain their delegated authority, which translates to thorough but efficient processing for borrowers.
