SBA loan basics
Short answer
SBA 7(a) loan interest rates are often competitive with, or slightly higher than, conventional commercial loans, but they offer more flexible terms and lower down payments.
SBA loan rates are typically tied to the Prime Rate plus a margin, similar to many conventional commercial loans. The margin is capped by the SBA. While the rate itself might sometimes be marginally higher than a top-tier conventional loan, the overall cost of capital can be lower due to the longer repayment terms and reduced equity requirements, which are often unavailable in conventional financing.
A business might be offered a conventional loan at Prime + 2.0% with a 7-year term. An SBA 7(a) loan might be Prime + 2.75% but with a 10-year term. Although the SBA rate is higher, the longer term results in lower monthly payments, which can be more advantageous for cash flow.
Insider move
Lenders must adhere to SBA's maximum interest rate caps. They explain the rate structure and total cost of borrowing, ensuring the borrower understands the trade-offs between rate, term, and down payment compared to conventional options.
