SBA loan basics
Short answer
The SBA guarantee lasts for the entire term of the 7(a) loan, provided the lender services the loan according to SBA policies. It does not expire after a set number of years if the loan is still outstanding.
The SBA's guarantee to the lender covers the guaranteed portion of the loan for the full duration of the loan's repayment term. This means that if a loan has a 10-year term, the guarantee is in effect for all 10 years, as long as the lender continues to comply with all SBA rules and regulations related to servicing and liquidation. It's not a temporary protection.
For a 10-year loan for business acquisition, the SBA's guarantee remains in effect for the entire 10-year repayment period. If the borrower defaults in year seven, the SBA would still honor its guarantee, assuming the lender acted appropriately.
Insider move
Lenders must maintain ongoing compliance with SBA servicing guidelines throughout the loan's life to ensure the guarantee remains valid. Any deviations in servicing could result in a repair or denial of the guarantee if a claim is later submitted.
