SBA 7(a) Q&A
Short answer
It can be more challenging to get an SBA 7(a) loan with limited industry experience, but it's not impossible if other strengths compensate.
Lenders prefer borrowers with relevant industry experience, as it increases the likelihood of success. However, if you have strong general business management skills, a robust business plan, significant financial resources, or a commitment to hire experienced management, these factors can help mitigate the lack of direct industry experience. Some lenders may require a period of seller training.
You have a strong finance background but no direct experience running a restaurant, which you plan to acquire. To get approval, you might need to demonstrate hiring an experienced chef and general manager, commit to an extensive training period with the seller, and have a very detailed, well-researched business plan.
Insider move
Lenders assess the borrower's management experience to ensure they can successfully operate the business. A lack of industry-specific experience raises concerns, and they will look for compensating factors or mitigation strategies, such as strong supporting management teams or extended seller training, to reduce the risk.
