SBA 7(a) Q&A
Short answer
An SBA 7(a) loan authorization typically specifies a disbursement deadline, which is usually 90 days from the date of authorization. If funds are not disbursed within this timeframe, the authorization may expire, requiring an extension or re-application.
The loan authorization issued by the lender (and guaranteed by the SBA) includes terms and conditions that must be met prior to funding. A critical condition is the disbursement deadline, which ensures the transaction proceeds in a timely manner and that the financial circumstances of the borrower and business have not materially changed.
If your SBA loan is approved on January 1st, the authorization may state that funds must be disbursed by March 31st. If the closing is delayed past March 31st due to legal issues, you would need to request an extension from the lender, which may require re-evaluating some aspects of the loan.
Insider move
Lenders are concerned about the validity of the underwriting if too much time passes between approval and funding. They will verify that no material adverse changes have occurred and may require updated financial statements or documents before granting an extension for disbursement.
