Short answer
Yes, it is possible for a startup business with no sales yet to get an SBA 7(a) loan, but it is generally more challenging and requires a very strong business plan and significant equity injection.
While SBA 7(a) loans are available for startups, lenders will place a heavy emphasis on the borrower's industry experience, the viability of the business plan, realistic financial projections, and the amount of personal equity injected. Without a sales history, projections must be highly credible, and the owner's management capabilities are paramount.
A seasoned chef with 20 years of experience opens a new restaurant. Despite no sales history, if they provide a detailed business plan, a significant equity injection, and strong personal credit, an SBA 7(a) loan could be approved.
