SBA loan basics
Short answer
It's challenging but possible for new or struggling businesses to get an SBA 7(a) loan, especially if you have a strong plan for future profitability.
Lenders generally prefer businesses with a history of profitability or at least positive cash flow. However, new businesses (startups) by definition won't be profitable initially. For existing businesses that are not yet profitable, lenders will require a compelling business plan, realistic financial projections demonstrating future profitability, and often a higher equity injection to mitigate risk.
A business that recently launched and is showing strong revenue growth but not yet net profit could secure an SBA 7(a) loan for working capital if its projections clearly show profitability within the next 12-18 months and the owner has strong personal financial standing.
Insider move
Lenders are primarily concerned with repayment ability. If a business is not currently profitable, they will scrutinize the cause, the path to profitability, the borrower's management capabilities, and the overall market outlook. Strong collateral and personal guaranties become even more critical.
