SBA loan basics
Short answer
The maximum repayment term for an SBA 7(a) loan depends on what the loan is used for: 10 years for working capital and equipment, and up to 25 years for real estate or a combination of real estate and other uses.
SBA establishes maximum maturities based on the loan's purpose. Working capital and equipment loans have a maximum term of 10 years. For loans primarily used to purchase or renovate real estate, or if real estate is a significant component of a business acquisition, the term can extend up to 25 years. These terms are designed to align with the useful life of the assets being financed.
A loan solely for buying new machinery would have a maximum 10-year term. However, if that machinery purchase is part of a larger project to buy the building the business operates from, the entire loan could potentially qualify for a 25-year term.
Insider move
Lenders determine the appropriate loan term based on the primary use of proceeds and the useful life of assets. They want to ensure the term is long enough to allow for manageable payments but not so long that it extends beyond the economic life of the financed assets.
