SBA loan basics
Short answer
For loans not involving real estate, such as for business acquisition or working capital, the maximum repayment period is typically 10 years.
The SBA sets maximum loan terms based on the use of proceeds. For equipment and business acquisition loans without real estate, the maximum term is typically 10 years. For working capital, the maximum term is also 10 years. Loans that include real estate can have a maximum term of 25 years.
A small consulting firm uses an SBA 7(a) loan to acquire a competitor and provide working capital. Since no real estate is involved, the lender sets the repayment term at 10 years.
