It depends on the loan's terms, but many SBA 7(a) loans, especially larger ones with longer maturities, may have a prepayment penalty if paid off early.
SBA regulations allow lenders to charge a prepayment penalty if an SBA 7(a) loan (with a maturity of 15 years or more) is prepaid within the first three years of the loan term, and the amount prepaid in any calendar year exceeds 25% of the outstanding principal balance. This helps compensate lenders for lost interest income. Smaller loans or those with shorter terms often do not have prepayment penalties.
If a borrower has a 20-year, $1 million SBA 7(a) loan and decides to pay it off in full during the second year, they would likely incur a prepayment penalty. However, if they pay off a $100,000, 7-year loan in full during its second year, there would typically be no penalty.
